LIKE CHRIST BUT NOT LIKE CHRIST
Do you like Christ? Yes and we are thankful for His
help, His healing and His teachings which guide and give meaning to our
primary motives and all secondary actions. We are, however, not like
Christ. To be like Christ is to be transformed and changed in the likeness
of Christ. It is possible to change.
Heb 12:1-3
1Therefore, since we are surrounded
by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders
and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the
race marked out for us. 2Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the
author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured
the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne
of God. 3Consider him who endured such opposition from
sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
1 John 4:17
17In this way, love is made complete
among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment, because in
this world we are like him.
God use 3 methods to transform us:
·
People
·
Problem
·
Beholding Jesus
People
God use people in everyday situations to speak to us-
our family, our spouse or children, work associates, classmates. They serve
as a mirror for us to reflect on our shortcomings, weakness and challenge us
to be a better individual- to be more like Jesus,
Proverbs 27:17
17 As iron sharpens iron,
so one man sharpens another.
Problem
ABC = Adversity Builds
Character.
Adversity makes us strong and build our inner
character. Character may be honesty, truthfulness, integrity and other
virtues. Whilst we do not necessarily need adversities, afflictions,
trails, hardships, crisis or tragedies to shake us. But if God allows them
for a purpose, we should embrace it, renew our inner character and move on.
Romans 8:28
28And we know that in all things God
works for the good of those who love him, who have been called
according to his purpose.
Beholding Jesus
In the last days, we will face godlessness and the
proliferation of decadence and deceit. God hates homosexuality and all
types of perversion. We need to stay focus on Jesus, draw near to Jesus and
behold Him.
2 Timothy 3:1-2
1But mark this: There will be
terrible times in the last days. 2People will be lovers of
themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their
parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3without love, unforgiving,
slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4treacherous,
rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— 5having
a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them.
Rm 1:26-27
26Because of this, God gave them over
to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for
unnatural ones. 27In the same way the men also abandoned
natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another.
Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the
due penalty for their perversion.
2 Cor 3:18
18And we, who with unveiled faces all
reflect[a]
the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his likeness with
ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.
Pslams 27
4 One thing I ask of the LORD,
this is what I seek:
that I may dwell in the house of the LORD
all the days of my life,
to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD
and to seek him in his temple.
BCDE- Beholding Christ
Develops Endurance
Nobody is exempted from temptations. Blessed is the man
that endured temptations. Remember that in life’s journey, there will be
many distractions that tempt us, things that will make us heavy and hold us
back. Indeed, they encumbered and drained us and slowed us down on the real
journey. Put them aside and travel lightly. Allow Jesus to carry your
burdens. At the time of our passing away, we leave all things behind, we can
never hope to carry even one thing with us. Before the end, this journey
continues and it will not easy as we will face people, problems, adversities
and temptations along the way. Perserve and endure, and focus on the cross
at the end of the journey.
James 1:2-4
Trials and Temptations
2Consider
it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds,
3because
you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance.
4Perseverance
must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking
anything.

Necessity
- To be filled with the Holy Spirit
Necessity - To be filled with the Holy
Spirit 12 Jul 2009
Pastor Tom / Philippines
Christianity is more of a relationship
than a religion. Religious people tended to equate doing good as the basis
and the way to blessings and to heaven. All the good that you do- give to
the poor, charity work, being a good father, a good citizen, however may be
futile and of no use unless you know God.
Let God do something in your life and
because of what He has done for you – you will also do for God in return.
You get connected to God. After being saved, the journey begins- it is a new
beginning of a new relationship.
When Jesus was on Earth, He saved
believers, died and ascended to Heaven. There is a purpose in all this
because unless Jesus go away, the Holy Spirit will not come. The Holy Spirit
will do exactly the same – to you, for you and with you as what Jesus have
done for them when He was alive.
Acts 2:1-4
The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost
1When the day of Pentecost came,
they were all together in one place. 2Suddenly a sound
like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole
house where they were sitting. 3They saw what seemed to be
tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4All
of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues[a]
as the Spirit enabled them
==========
Necessity - To be filled with the Holy Spirit
It is command to be
filled
It is a gift
Signs of being filled
Power from believing
+++++++
It is command to be filled
A command has been given to you to be
filled. It is a command to the early church. As true Christians, we should
be filled. Stop teaching and talking about it, but start applying it. We
called ourselves Charismatic- because we believe in something which others
do not. Obey the command because it is for every single believers- you have
no choice just as the gospel is to be preached to the end of the world.
John 2:5
5His mother said to the servants, "Do
whatever he tells you."
Eph 5:18
18Do not get drunk on wine, which
leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.
John 14:16
15"If you love me, you will obey what
I command. 16And I will ask the Father, and he will give
you another Counselor to be with you forever— 17the Spirit
of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows
him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be[c]
in you. 18I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to
you. 19Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but
you will see me. Because I live, you also will live.
It is a gift
Receive the gift. Your waiting is over.
It is for your benefit. If the Holy Spirit do not come, you are limited. God
is unlimited and giver of good gifts and you cannot outgive God- especially
in the gift of the Holy Spirit. After Jesus- the Holy Spirit came. So after
Salvation, we should embrace the Holy Spirit.
Acts 2:38-39
38Peter
replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus
Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of
the Holy Spirit.
Mark 16:19-20
19After the Lord Jesus had spoken to
them, he was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God.
20Then the disciples went out and preached everywhere, and
the Lord worked with them and confirmed his word by the signs that
accompanied it.
Signs of being filled
One of the signs of the manifestation
of the Holy Spirit – is the change they have brought to the world. The early
church were able to do great things – not by own ability – but through God.
When Holy Spirit is in charge – He knows all. The signs shall follow them ..eg
casting out demons, healing the sick..etc.
Another sign is speaking in tongues for
the first time. We do not call ourselves Charismatic/ Pentecostal because
we speak in tongues but because we speak in tongues- we are charismatic and
pentecostal
In modern days, the signs should follow
us even in the workplace. We must take the lead to expose the signs of the
Holy Spirit to the world out there. Go where it is dark and let them see
your light and glorify the Father for your good works.
Power from believing
Acts 1:8
8But you will receive power when the
Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in
all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."
Believe and receive one of the great
gifts. After you receive the power, it is like achieving the great
condition, then you can proceed to carry out the great commission, be it in
missions..etc. There could be 2 extremes- those that focus on preaching and
action but never pray or the other group that pray and pray but shows little
action. Whichever way, the world need Christ and unless we go, who else will
go and witness for Jesus..
May the lives of early witnesses and
martyrs, Stephen..etc where to die is gain- encourage us.

Jesus is never absent from
the church
Often times we find it easy to excuse
ourselves from going to a church meeting – and may allow a little
discomfort and disruption to control our moods and decisions. Some may have
genuine emergencies.
Matt 18:20
20For
where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them."
A meeting involves several factors:
PLACE
PEOPLE
PURPOSE
PERSON
PRESENCE
=======
A meeting can be in any place- in
a public library, in a hotel, in the basement, or even in the middle of a
warung in Kota. God is not controlled by the place- whether is it cosy, with
all the creature comforts like cushioned seats, AC and carpet..etc
We should not allow human distractions
such as children crying..etc and traffic noise..etc to distract us from our
focus on Jesus. In different countries, the place of gathering for worship
and prayers ..etc may be different, but place is not so important.
People is
the essence of every meeting. In the early church, they gather to be
instructed, for communion, fellowship and prayers. Where 2 or 3 are
gathered, the invisible person is amongst us. It shall be done. Of all the
meetings, it is wise choice to be in the house of the Lord- as Jesus attend
every meeting. More than that, we need to be committed by being punctual and
consistent and not fall into the skipping habit- as to be on and off
Christians .
Acts 2:42
42They
devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the
breaking of bread and to prayer.
There is a purpose for our
gathering together - to exhort, praise and glorify the name of Jesus. We
come and we participate in spiritual songs to magnify the Lord and at the
same time edify and encourage one another. Do not allow feelings and mood
changes to dictate our directions – which is towards the narrow pathway
which leads to heaven.
Heb 10:24-25
24And
let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.
25Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the
habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see
the Day approaching.
1st Thess 4:18
18Therefore
encourage each other with these words.
In each meeting, we call upon the name
of the person – in the name of Jesus- the name that is worthy to be
praised and the name above all names. Because of the person of Jesus, we
cannot feel nothing.
In every meeting, He is in the midst of
them. In his presence, Jesus will impact certain truth and touch
differently. Each Sunday will be different. Every meeting is unique as led
by the Holy Spirit- as He imparts His revelation and His truth as we draw
near to Him. In his presence, we must be honest, be sincere and be open to
receive

26 Jul 2009 LIVING
A LEGACY AND LEAVING A LEGACY
Pastor Bernard Foo
What do you want to leave your
children when you are gone. We all have dreams for our children and our
family.
In my case, I have 2 boys who are gifts
from God- I have dreams for them to fulfil their dreams- in the field of
missions to heal the sick and help drug addicts. .etc. I have dreams for
the church and churches we planted from Philippines, Bangladesh to
Indonesia..etc. In my own life, when I was diagnosed with prostate cancer 3
years ago, there was such a sense and feeling of loss when the doctor broke
the news. God is Jehovah Rapha.
In the true story of a boy rescue from
the plane crash in San Gabriel Mountains in Ontario, he simply says, ” I am
alive because my dad teach me never to give up.”
In another story of a remote tribe in
India, a village chief experience many deaths within the family – son,
daughter-in-law..etc When they start to hear the name of Jesus, however,
the deaths stopped.
Deut 6:4-12
4
Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.
[a]
5
Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with
all your strength.
6
These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts.
7
Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when
you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.
8
Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.
9
Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.
10
When the LORD your God brings you into the land he swore to your fathers, to
Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give you—a land with large, flourishing cities
you did not build,
11
houses filled with all kinds of good things you did not provide, wells you
did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant—then when you
eat and are satisfied,
12
be careful that you do not forget the LORD, who brought you out of Egypt,
out of the land of slavery.
We are
living in end times- and the signs are around us. The sense of purpose of
living is almost void. This is materialistic generation. There is a
deprivation of healthy self worth, of good and Godly discipline and divine
direction based on God’s instruction and God’s purpose.
2nd Timothy 3:1-5
Godlessness in the Last Days
1But
mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days.
2People
will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive,
disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy,
3without
love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of
the good,
4treacherous,
rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God—
5having
a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them.
HOW CAN YOU AND I -AS PARENTS PLAY OUR
PART to instill healthy self worth. Parents are the first teacher. We need
to instill the Father-God-Love in our children. Jesus save us to take us out
of hell – more than that- he came to call us into sonship with the Father.
We may not fully understand how as a young boy- we found God or God found
us. In their walk with God, young people and children often suffers from
image and identity problems as they try to relate to others, as well as the
expectations of others – parents, siblings, relatives, teacher, classmates
and others. They are demoralized by failures, poor social communication,
name calling and hurts..etc. Sometimes children are let down by their
parents- their earthly father.
We need to teach them to come to Jesus
and come to the Father so they have the right sense of identity. We need to
instill Father God love to give them the self worth and encourage them to
walk with God to have the sense of security.
Galatian 4:4
4But
when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under
law,
5to
redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons.
6Because
you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who
calls out, "Abba,[a]
Father."
7So
you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, God has made
you also an heir.
Rm 8 :15
15For
you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you
received the Spirit of sonship.[g] And by
him we cry, "Abba,[h]
Father."
16The
Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children.
17Now
if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ,
if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his
glory.
Psalms 68:5
5 A father to the
fatherless, a defender of widows,
is God in his holy dwelling.
Psalms 103:13
13 As a father
has compassion on his children,
so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him;
Isaiah 63:16
16
But you are our Father,
though Abraham does not know us
or Israel acknowledge us;
you, O LORD, are our Father,
our Redeemer from of old is your name.
Matt 7:9-11
9"Which
of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone?
10Or
if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake?
11If
you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your
children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those
who ask him!
Next, we look at dysfunctional family for different reasons.
Sometimes, parents drive children to perform, to be the best of the best so
much that they become slaves to perform. We may push the children over the
edge – and scared them and the impact of a failure can devastate the sense
of security and self worth. In other situations, the discovery of some dark
secrets, ill treatment, extra marital affairs..e.g father having another
family, mistress, lover..etc can have a big impact on the children. We need
to bring our focus back to Father God is love. Love is His nature- He is
merciful, gracious, longsuffering, truth..etc His love is constant and not
affected by situations, feelings or other conditions. He rescues us more
than He judge. Father God can give us the identity in Christ and restore us
back- so we can start to reconcile and move forward in our lives.
In old testament times, it is so important to do things right
in the sight of God. We can look at the lives of Kind David and Joseph to
learn about our own relationships to our father as well as father with their
children.
Father should not be biased against /towards any child
because of his weakness or problems (David was omitted in the lineup when
prophet Jesse came to his household). We also see David’s own son Absalom
wanted to kill him. We need to start treating all our children equally- as
God forgave us and covered us.
In Joseph’s case, he suffered a great deal and was sold off.
His dream and vision, and his rightful relationship with his father was a
source of his strength, his deep love – in his upright life.
